Top Five Wednesday || Favorite Fathers/Father Figures

With the new blog refresh/revival comes new weekly features! I've decided to join in Top 5 Wednesday, a weekly feature hosted by Sam from Thoughts on Tomes. Each week there's a featured topic and I get to recommend some of my favorite books that fall within that topic. Check out their Goodreads group for more info!

In honor of Father's day, which falls on June 17th here in the US, the topic for this week is "Favorite Fathers/Father Figures".

You know, I don't think Father's get enough love in a lot of books, so I'm excited to highlight some of my favorites. They come from a variety of different books so be sure to check them out if you're interested!

  • Atticus Finch from To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee — If you've read To Kill a Mockingbird and Atticus is not on your list of favorite fathers's than who are you? Just kidding, just kidding. But I loved Atticus from the moment I first read To Kill a Mockingbird and the way he treated Scout like an adult. Kids get so overlooked but he always treated her with respect and I appreciated that.
  • Hans Hubermann from The Book Thief by Markus Zusak  — Hans, or Papa as he is known to all readers of The Book Thief is such a gentle soul and foster father to Liesel. And yet, he is one of the strongest characters in the book. He cared so deeply for Liesel, like she was his own daughter and I was in tears at the end of the story because of how much I loved him as a father figure.
  • Harry Callahan from the Young Wizards series by Diane Duane — To say I love Nita's dad in this series is such an understatement. He's this super mellow father that owns a flower shop on Long Island and takes the fact that both his daughters are wizards in stride.
  • Kelsier from the Mistborn Trilogy by Brandon Sanderson — I love the way Kell takes Vin under his wing and is pretty much the first real parental figure she knows. He's definitely not perfect, but you can tell that he loves her the way a father loves a daughter
  • Hudson Graham from the Sammy Keyes series by Wendelin Van Draanen — This one might be cheating, since Husdon is more of a grandfather figure in Sammy's life, but I'm going to say it counts. I always loved how Sammy would come to Hudson whenever she had a problem she couldn't solve, whether it was with friends or whatever mess she got herself in while solving a mystery she had no business being a part of. He's like the wise old wizard trope character in fantasy but wearing cool boots instead of a set of wizards robes.

Who are some of your favorite fathers or father figures in fiction? Let me know down in the comments!

Happy reading!

  1. I have Hans on my list, but I totally forgot about Atticus! He appears a lot on other people's list, he's definitely one of the most beloved father figures :)

    1. I almost forgot about Hans, actually! I originally had another character on my list (David from The Unseen World) but then I was browsing through my shelves and saw The Book Thief and switched Hans in because I'd forgotten how great he is.
